Dutch Wonderland Employee Honored for Community Service
(Lancaster, PA) – Ephrata resident, cancer survivor and Dutch Wonderland safety and security manager, Vicky Darden, is being honored for her extensive community service work by Central Pennsylvania College at a Community Service Recognition Banquet on February 7, 2008.
Darden, who is a current student at Central Pennsylvania College majoring in Small Business and Entrepreneurship, is actively involved in programs that bring awareness to and help find a cure for cancer.
Of the 1,200 students at Central Pennsylvania College, only 15 are being recognized for their outstanding community service work. Rick Fox, Darden's admissions counselor and the Educational Outreach Coordinator for the college, nominated her for the award.
"Vicky's work has a tremendous life impact for not only herself, but also for others as well. She goes above and beyond what is required of our students and she is a great role model for others," Fox said.
Darden remains humble and sincere about her service. "I don't do it for the recognition. Cancer is a disease that needs a voice and I'm honored to help in any way I can through my volunteer work," she said.
Darden's advocacy for cancer awareness has taken many forms. She is the organizer and driving force behind LIVESTRONG Day at Dutch Wonderland each spring. During that event, pediatric cancer patients and their families are invited to enjoy at day in the Park at no cost.
Darden also walked in the Race for the Cure in Harrisburg; completed the LIVESTRONG Challenge, a 100-mile bike tour aimed at raising awareness; was one of 200 advocates nationwide and one of 11 in Pennsylvania who attended hearings on Capitol Hill with Lance Armstrong to bring awareness to the cause; helped fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society through Daffodil Days; and most recently, was selected to be the leader of the Susquehanna Valley LIVESTRONG Army. The LIVESTRONG Army works together with the Lance Armstrong Foundation to raise awareness for cancer and demand that it is made a national priority.
